Best CDN for India Websites 2026: Cloudflare vs AWS CloudFront vs Fastly
“Best CDN for India 2026 depends on the workload, not a universal speed ranking. Cloudflare is usually the simplest starting point for small publishers and security-conscious sites. CloudFront fits AWS-native stacks and bundled flat-rate plans. Fastly fits teams that need programmable caching, rapid purges and usage-based regional pricing.

What You'll Learn

  • How Cloudflare, AWS CloudFront and Fastly differ for Indian websites.
  • What their current free and paid pricing pages actually show.
  • Why a CDN POP in India does not guarantee a fixed page speed.
  • How to choose a CDN by origin, cacheability, security, purge needs and traffic pattern.

Best CDN for India 2026 is a useful search query, but it hides several different questions. A small blog wants simple DNS, caching and protection. An AWS application may want CloudFront close to S3, ALB or API Gateway. A high-change media or commerce platform may care more about programmable cache rules, instant purges and request visibility.

A content delivery network is a reverse proxy between visitors and an origin. It may serve an object from cache, terminate TLS near the visitor, collapse repeated requests or forward the request to the origin. The result depends on cache-control headers, object size, cache hit ratio, DNS routing, origin location, TLS setup, image weight and application behavior. A provider’s network map is not a complete performance test.

This comparison uses the current Cloudflare Free plan page, AWS CloudFront pricing page, Fastly pricing page and Fastly POP documentation reviewed in August 2026. Pricing and network locations can change, so use the provider pages again before committing to a large migration.

Why does an Indian website need a CDN?

A CDN can reduce the distance between a visitor and cacheable content. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts and video segments can be served from a nearby edge location when the cache is configured correctly. The origin still matters. If every request bypasses the cache and travels to a server in the United States or Europe, the CDN cannot remove the origin round trip.

CDNs also reduce pressure on the origin during traffic spikes. A product launch, viral article or bot burst can generate many requests for the same assets. A cache can serve repeat requests without asking the origin to rebuild or retransmit the object each time. Security services can also block some unwanted traffic before it reaches the application, although CDN protection does not replace secure code, authentication or an application firewall policy.

For Indian visitors, test at least two categories of request. First test a cacheable static page, image or stylesheet. Then test an uncached HTML page or API request that depends on the origin. A provider may perform well on the first and show little improvement on the second. This distinction is more useful than saying one CDN is always faster in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru or a smaller city.

Request typeWhat the CDN can improveWhat it cannot hide
Cacheable image, CSS or JavaScriptEdge delivery, TLS setup and origin offloadOversized files, poor compression or a low cache hit ratio
Cacheable HTMLResponse distance and repeat deliveryIncorrect cache headers, personalized content or stale invalidation
Dynamic API requestTLS termination, routing and some connection overheadDatabase wait, third-party API delay and application CPU time
Unwanted or abusive requestSome DDoS, bot and rate-limiting protection depending on planVulnerable application logic or leaked credentials

Search ranking also needs careful wording. Faster pages can improve user experience and may help field performance signals, but a CDN alone does not guarantee better rankings. Content, rendering, mobile usability, layout stability, accessibility and the actual user device still matter.

Cloudflare, CloudFront or Fastly: quick comparison

All three products can deliver cached content through a distributed network, but the product boundary is different. Cloudflare presents a broad web platform around DNS, proxying, CDN, security and add-on services. CloudFront is deeply connected to the AWS ecosystem and can be purchased through a flat-rate plan or pay-as-you-go pricing. Fastly focuses on programmable delivery, real-time operational control and usage-based pricing with regional bandwidth rates.

CDNBest starting pointPricing shapeMain decision risk
CloudflareSmall publishers, public websites and teams already using Cloudflare DNSFree web plan plus paid web, security, routing and developer add-onsAssuming every advanced feature is included in the Free plan
AWS CloudFrontAWS-native applications using S3, ALB, API Gateway or other AWS servicesFlat-rate plans or pay-as-you-go deliveryChoosing a plan without modeling requests, transfer and AWS origin services
FastlyTeams needing programmable caching, rapid invalidation and detailed edge controlUsage-based regional bandwidth and requests, with enterprise packagesIgnoring India’s regional bandwidth rate and the operational cost of edge configuration

That table is a starting filter, not a scorecard. A small site can run successfully on any of them. The harder question is which dashboard, billing model and runtime your team can operate without turning a simple cache layer into another source of outages.

Cloudflare for Indian websites: where it fits

Cloudflare’s current Free plan page describes free SSL, CDN and DDoS protection as core parts of its basic offering. That makes it an easy starting point for a blog, documentation site, portfolio or small business website. DNS and proxy configuration can be managed in the same account, which reduces the number of separate systems a small team must understand.

Cloudflare has a broad set of paid add-ons. Load Balancing, Argo Smart Routing, rate limiting, Workers and other developer or security services have their own conditions and prices. A technically accurate comparison should not call every Cloudflare feature free just because basic CDN proxying is available on a Free plan.

Cloudflare is also more than a CDN when Workers, KV, D1, R2 or other services are added. That breadth can be useful for an edge-oriented architecture. It can also create configuration debt. Before enabling a new service, record the data location, cache behavior, failure mode, request limits, secret handling and rollback path.

For a current Cloudflare edge inference example, read our Workers AI guide. It is related to the developer platform, but it is not evidence that a normal CDN request includes free AI inference or unlimited compute.

AWS CloudFront for AWS-native stacks

CloudFront is a natural candidate when the origin already lives in AWS. The service can sit in front of S3, an Application Load Balancer, API Gateway or another publicly accessible origin. AWS documents cache delivery, TLS termination near viewers, request collapsing and private-network connectivity to AWS applications as part of the performance model.

The current CloudFront pricing page shows flat-rate plans with no overage charges. The displayed options are Free at $0 per month per distribution, Pro at $15, Business at $200 and Premium at $1,000, followed by custom pricing. The same table shows plan-specific request and data-transfer allowances. AWS also retains a pay-as-you-go path, which is a different cost model and should not be mixed into one estimate.

The Free flat-rate plan currently shows 1 million requests and 100 GB of data transfer. Pro shows 10 million requests and 50 TB, while Business shows 125 million requests and 50 TB. Premium shows 500 million requests and 50 TB with additional configuration noted on the pricing page. These allowances are not a promise that the entire AWS stack costs zero. S3 storage, origin compute, logging and other services may still have their own charges.

CloudFront is attractive when the team already knows AWS IAM, distributions, origins, cache behaviors and monitoring. It is less attractive when the website is a simple blog and the team would rather avoid learning a large infrastructure control plane for one reverse proxy.

Our interactive coding tools article and coding AI guide are relevant if the CDN will sit in front of a developer tool or documentation product. The CDN decision should still follow the application’s origin and deployment architecture.

Fastly for programmable delivery and high-change content

Fastly’s current pricing page shows a usage-based Full Site Delivery model with 100 GB of bandwidth and 1 million requests free. After that free tier, bandwidth is priced by region. The page currently lists India at $0.28 per GB for the 100 GB to 10 TB band, then $0.24 per GB for the next 10 TB. Requests are priced separately after the first 1 million.

Those figures make Fastly easy to describe and easy to misunderstand. A site with low request volume but large Indian media delivery can produce a different bill from a site with many small HTML requests. Image optimization, TLS domains, Compute, security and observability may add separate usage or package considerations.

Fastly’s POP documentation describes each point of presence as a cluster of cache servers and says the network changes as new sites are added or combined. The documentation also explains shielding. A cache miss can move through a shield POP before reaching the origin, which may improve origin protection but adds another part of the request path to measure.

Fastly is a reverse proxy and origin-pull service. It accelerates content from your origin and does not act as a general content-upload host. That distinction matters when a team expects the CDN itself to store an entire application without S3, a server or another origin behind it.

Fastly becomes more interesting when the site changes content frequently and the team needs programmable VCL or Compute logic, controlled invalidation and detailed visibility. It is not automatically the cheapest option for Indian traffic. Use the regional rate, request volume, object size and cache-hit ratio in the estimate.

Why India edge locations do not guarantee the fastest CDN

An India POP can shorten the path for a cache hit, but it cannot fix every slow request. A visitor may receive a cache miss, a personalized response or a request that must query a database in another country. The origin may be overloaded. DNS may direct traffic through a different path. The page may be blocked on a large image or a third-party script after the CDN has already delivered the HTML.

Do not publish a fixed “under 500ms” promise without a reproducible test. The old version of this article used broad timing claims and a 50 to 80 percent improvement estimate. Those numbers were not tied to a dated test setup, URL, cache state, network provider, device class or origin configuration. They are removed.

A useful India test records the location, network, device, URL, cache status, response headers, transfer size, DNS time, TCP and TLS setup, time to first byte, largest contentful paint and error rate. Repeat each test with a warm cache and a cold cache. Test Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and at least one smaller-city network only if those are real audiences for the site. A single synthetic run is not a national performance report.

For a technology publisher, compare the current site’s actual pages rather than a blank benchmark page. The same HTML, images, cache-control headers, compression and origin should be deployed to each provider. Otherwise the test measures implementation differences instead of CDN differences.

Pricing and operations: what should you calculate?

Start with monthly cacheable data transfer, request count, cache-hit ratio, image transformation requests, invalidation volume and origin transfer. Then add the cost of TLS certificates, WAF rules, bot management, logs, serverless edge code, storage, DNS and support. A free headline price is not a cost model.

MetricWhy it matters in IndiaQuestion to answer before migration
Indian data transferRegional pricing can differ from North America or EuropeWhat share of monthly bytes are delivered to Indian viewers?
RequestsMany small assets or APIs can create a large request countAre requests cacheable, blocked, collapsed or forwarded to origin?
Cache-hit ratioHigher hits usually reduce origin work and round tripsWhich paths are bypassing cache and why?
Purge or invalidation volumeNews, commerce and live content may change oftenHow quickly must old content disappear, and what does that cost?
Origin and security servicesThe CDN may not include storage, compute, WAF or logs in one billWhich separate provider services will be required?

Cloudflare is often the simplest value choice for a small public website because basic CDN, SSL and DDoS protection are available together. CloudFront can be easier to justify when AWS services and a flat-rate plan reduce operational fragmentation. Fastly can be a strong fit when cache control and edge programming have direct product value. “Best” is a billing and operations decision as much as a network decision.

Our AI platform comparison shows a similar rule. Vendor selection should compare the workflow, limits and operating cost rather than trusting one headline score.

Which CDN should Indian developers choose in 2026?

Choose Cloudflare first when the site is a blog, documentation property, portfolio, small business website or content platform that needs straightforward proxying, SSL and basic protection. It is also a practical option when the team already manages DNS and cache rules in Cloudflare. Confirm the plan boundary before assuming that Workers, advanced routing or security add-ons are included.

Choose CloudFront when the origin is already in AWS or when the team wants CloudFront, WAF, DDoS protection, DNS, TLS, logs and edge compute in an AWS flat-rate plan. Compare the plan allowance with the actual request and data-transfer forecast. If the origin is not in AWS, the integration advantage may be smaller than expected.

Choose Fastly when the product benefits from programmable delivery, rapid content invalidation, shielding or edge logic and the team is prepared to model regional usage. Its free tier is real, but India bandwidth after the free allowance is priced separately. For a high-volume publisher or media site, calculate bytes and request patterns before selecting it on engineering reputation alone.

Before changing DNS, deploy the same application to a test hostname. Preserve redirects, security headers, cache-control, cookies, compression and image behavior. Compare representative India requests and watch the origin logs. Then move a small percentage of traffic if the architecture permits it. A CDN change can look successful in a browser while silently breaking webhooks, authenticated pages or cache invalidation.

Related platform coverage is available in our Cloudflare Pages versus Vercel comparison, Canva AI analysis, MCP explainer and MCP architecture guide. These posts cover adjacent platform choices, but they do not replace a traffic and origin test for your own website.

Conclusion: the best CDN is the one your team can measure

Cloudflare is the most accessible starting point for many Indian websites, CloudFront is the natural AWS-native choice and Fastly is compelling when programmable caching and operational control matter. That is a practical shortlist, not a permanent ranking. Network maps, plan limits, regional prices and application architectures change.

The defensible way to choose is to measure cache hits and misses from the networks that actually visit the site. Include origin location, cache-control, asset size, request volume, invalidation behavior, security requirements and the full bill. If a provider cannot be evaluated against those facts, a confident “fastest CDN” claim is just marketing with a stopwatch attached.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cloudflare is often the simplest starting point for a small Indian website because its Free plan includes CDN, SSL and DDoS protection. CloudFront is a natural fit for AWS-native applications, while Fastly suits teams that need programmable caching and detailed edge control. The best choice depends on origin, cacheability and traffic.
Cloudflare, Amazon CloudFront and Fastly can serve Indian visitors through their distributed networks. A provider's published POP list can change, and an India location does not guarantee the same latency for every request. Test cache hits, cache misses and dynamic origin requests from the networks your audience actually uses.
Yes. Both can operate as reverse-proxy CDNs, but their product emphasis differs. Cloudflare combines CDN, DNS, SSL, DDoS protection and other web services. Fastly emphasizes programmable delivery, rapid invalidation, shielding and usage-based regional pricing. The better fit depends on the team's operational and caching requirements.
Cloudflare's Free plan page describes free SSL, CDN and DDoS protection. Advanced features such as Load Balancing, Argo Smart Routing, rate limiting and Workers have separate conditions or pricing. Free basic proxying should not be treated as an unlimited version of every Cloudflare service.
The current CloudFront pricing page shows flat-rate options beginning at $0 per month per distribution, followed by $15, $200 and $1,000 monthly plans, plus custom pricing. The page also shows plan-specific request and data-transfer allowances. AWS offers a separate pay-as-you-go model, and other AWS services can still add costs.
No. A nearby edge location can help a cache hit, but dynamic requests may still wait for the origin, database, third-party API or a cache miss. DNS routing, cache-control headers, asset size and device network also affect results. Use a repeatable test with warm and cold cache conditions.
Deploy identical content to a test hostname and measure cacheable HTML, images, CSS, JavaScript and dynamic requests. Record DNS time, TLS setup, time to first byte, cache status, transfer size, largest contentful paint and errors from the target networks. Preserve redirects, cookies, security headers and invalidation behavior before changing DNS.
