What is Karmashree Scheme?

The Karmashree Scheme is a flagship employment initiative of the West Bengal Government, introduced in the 2024–25 Budget to provide 50 days of guaranteed wage employment to rural households holding valid MGNREGA Job Cards. It was announced by Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya to address rural unemployment caused by the Central Government's stoppage of MGNREGA funds to West Bengal since March 2022.

Key Benefits at a Glance:

  • 50 days guaranteed employment per household per year (100 days under Mahatmashree)
  • ✅ Wages at par with MGNREGA rates
  • ✅ Unskilled work within 5 km of residence — no migration required
  • 50% reservation for women
  • ✅ Entirely state-funded — independent of Central Government

Why Was Karmashree Needed?

In March 2022, the Central Government stopped MGNREGA funds to West Bengal citing alleged irregularities, leaving approximately 2 crore job card holders without guaranteed work. With over ₹7,500 crore in legitimate dues withheld, the state launched Karmashree from its own resources to ensure rural families had employment during the agricultural lean season — without waiting for Central clearance.
