What is T+0 Settlement?

T+0 settlement means "Trade date + 0 days" — that is, same-day settlement. If you sell shares today, the money reaches your bank account the same evening. If you buy shares, they appear in your Demat account the same day. There is no waiting period.

Until recently, Indian investors had to wait at least one working day (T+1) to receive their funds or shares. T+0 changes that entirely.

Simple example: You sell Reliance shares at 10 AM on Monday. Under T+0, the money is in your account by 5 PM the same Monday.

How Does the Current T+1 System Work?

Since January 2023, India has been on T+1 settlement for all stocks — a significant improvement from the previous T+2 system.

Day What Happens
T (Trade Day)You buy or sell shares
T+1 (Next Working Day)Shares or money are settled in your accounts

Example: If you sell on Monday, the money arrives on Tuesday. If you sell on Friday, it arrives on Monday (weekends excluded).

Why is SEBI Introducing T+0?

SEBI's T+0 initiative is driven by three key goals:

  • Better liquidity for investors — money is immediately available for the next investment after selling
  • Reduced settlement risk — shorter settlement windows mean less counterparty and default risk
  • Global competitiveness — aligning India's markets with the speed of advanced global exchanges

How T+0 Benefits Retail Investors

  • Immediate reinvestment: Sell in the morning, reinvest the proceeds the same afternoon
  • Emergency liquidity: If you need cash urgently, selling shares now gets funds the same day
  • No overnight risk: Exit a position before market close and avoid holding risk overnight
  • Capital efficiency: Use the same ₹1 lakh for multiple trades in a single day

Trading Strategies for T+0

1. Same-Day Delivery Buy-and-Sell

Under T+0, you can buy shares as a delivery trade and sell them the same day if the price moves in your favour — without needing to classify it as intraday (MIS). Settlement happens the same day either way.

2. Quick Profit Booking on News Events

When a major announcement moves a stock sharply, you can enter and exit within hours. Your capital is freed up the same day for the next opportunity.

3. Capital Rotation

With T+0, you can exit Trade 1 in the morning and use those same funds for Trade 2 in the afternoon — something that was not possible under T+1.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Is T+0 available for all stocks?

No. T+0 is currently a pilot available only for 25–30 selected large-cap stocks. T+1 remains the mandatory settlement system for all other stocks.

Q2: Do I need to do anything special to use T+0?

Check whether your broker app supports T+0 for eligible stocks. When placing an order in a T+0-eligible stock during the 9:15 AM–1:30 PM window, you should see a "T+0 Settlement" option to select.

Q3: Is T=0 the same as T+0?

Yes. Both refer to same-day settlement. "T=0" is simply another way of writing "T+0" (Trade date + 0 days).

Q4: What happened to T+2 in India?

India moved from T+2 to T+1 settlement in January 2023. T+2 is now discontinued in India, though it is still used in some international markets including the US.

Q5: When will T+0 be available for all stocks?

SEBI is gradually expanding the pilot. A broader rollout across all stocks is expected by 2025–26, subject to a successful review of the pilot programme.
