What is e-Shram Portal and Why Was It Created?

Launched on 26 August 2021, the e-Shram portal (eshram.gov.in) is India's first national database for unorganized workers. Before e-Shram, there was no central record of workers in the informal economy — making it impossible to deliver targeted benefits during crises like COVID-19.

The portal bridges this gap. Once registered, a worker's details — name, Aadhaar, bank account, occupation, income, and location — are stored in a central database. This enables the government to push direct benefit transfers (DBT), offer insurance, and link workers to housing, health, and livelihood schemes automatically.

⚠️ 2026 Update: The ₹2 lakh PMSBY insurance is free only for the first year after registration. From year two onwards, ₹20/year is auto-debited from your linked bank account on June 1st. Ensure your account has sufficient balance to avoid insurance lapse.

How to Claim ₹2 Lakh Accident Insurance

The accident insurance is provided under Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY). To file a claim after accidental death or disability:

  1. The nominee (or claimant) must visit the worker's registered bank branch
  2. Submit the PMSBY claim form with supporting documents: FIR copy, post-mortem report (for death), hospital discharge summary (for disability), and nominee's Aadhaar + bank details
  3. The bank forwards the claim to the tied insurance company (New India Assurance or similar)
  4. Claim is typically settled within 30–60 days

Insurance renewal: After the first free year, ₹20/year is auto-debited on June 1st. If the bank account balance is insufficient, PMSBY coverage lapses until it is renewed again.

Frequently Asked Questions — e-Shram Card 2026

Can I register for e-Shram card without an Aadhaar-linked mobile number?
Online registration requires OTP via your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. If your mobile is not linked to Aadhaar, visit a CSC centre — they can verify your identity via biometric fingerprint scan instead. The service is free at all CSC centres.
Is e-Shram card valid for life?
Yes. Your 12-digit UAN is a lifetime number and never expires. You can update your details anytime. However, the PMSBY insurance must be renewed annually — ensure ₹20 is available in your linked bank account around June 1st each year to maintain coverage.
Can a migrant worker register in a different state from their home state?
Yes. Migrant workers can register using their Aadhaar and current bank account regardless of which state they are working in. The e-Shram card and UAN are nationally valid — you can update your current work location anytime.
What is the difference between e-Shram card and Labour card?
Labour card (BOCW card) is state-specific, issued by State Labour Departments, and covers only construction workers. e-Shram card is a central government scheme covering 400+ occupation categories across all states. Construction workers can and should hold both cards, as each provides different benefits.
Does e-Shram card provide monthly pension?
Not directly. However, e-Shram registered workers get easy enrollment access to PM-SYM (Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan Yojana), which provides ₹3,000/month pension after age 60 for workers who contribute ₹55–₹200/month starting before age 40.
Will I get ₹1,000 per month cash from e-Shram card in 2026?
The ₹1,000/month payment was a one-time COVID-19 ex-gratia given in 2021. As of 2026, there is no regular monthly cash payment under the e-Shram scheme. Benefits are scheme-linked — DBT payments come through individual schemes like PM Kisan, MGNREGA, and similar programs.
